Grindellodge’s History
The Grindellodge as we know today is a relatively new building, yet the former Lauberhorn uncovers a longer history from 1897, as far as we know!
We would also like to tell the story of Japanese pioneers that were coming in the early mountaineering days to explore Grindelwald.

Residence Lauberhorn - Fritz Bohren Era
Opposite the retirement home was the โResidence Lauberhorn,โ a notable building with a rich history. The site was once home to a private residence built in 1897/98 by mountain guide Fritz Bohren, who tragically died in 1902 after being struck by lightning on the Wetterhorn. The construction was supported by Prussian Colonel Ludwig August von Neukirchen, a resident of the nearby Ischzaun, who passed away in 1908.ย
Today, only the hotel name remains as a reminder of this past.
Pension Lauberhorn - Schaub Era
The Lauberhorn only became a guesthouse in the 1920s.ย
In 1937, Schaub was nominated as the hotelier.ย
Ris - Tante Alice Era
In 1944, the Ris family took over the pension. She was adored by everyone and called โAunt Aliceโ for short. She always had a compassionate heart for her guests and was able to soothe many sorrows.ย
When WW2 was over and the wooden barracks disappeared again, she was put in charge of the Lauberhorn Guesthouse by the Association for Public Health. Here too, she worked to the best of her abilities and our valley became her second home.ย
After some time, she followed the call of her sick mother and quietly left the valley to fulfill a new duty in her home village.
Hohwald Schild Era
The Howald-Schild family built the Hotel Lauberhorn in 1963.
The old guesthouse was demolished in 1970.
The second generation, the Erwin Howald-Fischer family, started at the Lauberhorn.
Erwin Howald & Marianne Fischer Era
The Hotel Lauberhorn was built in 1963 by the Howald-Schild family on the site of the former guesthouse of the same name, zu Isch, and was later run by Erwin and Marianne Howald-Leibundgut in the second generation.ย
It offered two-star comfort and had 60 beds.
Beni & Conny Kaufmann
On the 25th of January 2005, Conny Kaufmann purchased the Lauberhorn. In May 2005 the Hotel Lauberhorn reopened after some renovations.ย
Conny and Beni Kaufmann were running the Lauberhorn as a Mountainbike Hotel. Beni paraglides since 1987 and is a qualified tandem paraglider pilot. As a ski instructor and mountain bike guide, he enjoyed sharing tips with his guests.ย
As for Conny, the lady from eastern Switzerland, who may not speak like a local, but is in every other way, more of a Grindelwalder than many natives. She is an avid skier with a love for hiking and mountain biking
Today: Grindellodge Era
A new chapter unveils with the Lauberhorn being renamed Grindellodge. With an intensive renovation phase in 2024, the hotel reopens under a new management, part of The Glacier.ย
